Mother in law gave me a cabinet. It is a dark wood finish, not shiny. I would like to paint it white. Do I need to strip it or can I just sand it a little, then prime and paint? Thanks.

A "dark wood finish" can be many things. Is it real wood with a dark stain or is it particle board with contact paper on it (these were quite popular for a while - functional and really cheap). It could be particle board (or other type material) with a "real" wood finish sprayed on it. It could even be a laminate that has dulled.

Since we don't know, then I wouldn't sand it. Prime it with a stain-killing oil-based primer such as BIN (from zinsser). Do this in a well-ventilated area. Then paint with the paint of your choice.
