View Full Version : Stripping Detail

I am in the preparation stage of painting the interior of our 1930 Spanish style house. The window, door frame, and door trim has molded detail in it. I have tried several different paint removers and finally found that a heat gun works best for removing the old paint quickly and with little mess.

However, while stripping flat surfaces is quick and easy, when doing the detail molding (curves, ogees, etc.), I munge the wood, as my stripping tools seem to catch the wood grain (pine or similar softwood), and gouge it or dig out chunks.

What is a good tool for scraping detail? I have a tear drop shaped scraper, but that doesn't work, and of course the 5-in-one scraper which works great on flat surfaces has no curves. What seems to be the best idea is a scraper shaped just like the detail contours, but I've never seen anything like that.

I look forward to recomendations for solving this problem. Thanks.
