The insulation in my attic is 40 year old R11 fiberglass Kraft faced insulation. The Kraft facing is brittle, so whenever I disturb the insulation the Kraft facing crumbles. Since I'd like to add new insulation on top of it, would it be OK to do so given the brittleness of the Kraft facing?

Just add Insulation...You could lay fiberglass batts over it.. Or for a little more money pay a contractor to blow in cellulose or fiberglass.. I would add an R-30 to your existing .. In this area it costs about the same to do it yourself as to have it installed.. A vapor barrier is not neccessary in the ceiling as long as you have appropriate attic ventilation...

Good Luck
