We have a very old cedar chest which had been painted over the original finish. The paint stripped of easily with a citrus based stripper but the original varnish (or whatever it is) turned to a gummy, gooey mess in the process. What type of finish was it and how should we remove it? Sanding is not an option for the ornate handles.

The clear finish originally applied was almost certainly lacquer. Continued application of the citrus stripper along with 0000 steel wool should do the trick. If not, a 50/50 mix of lacquer thinner and denatured alcohol will.
