Can you remove an ink stain from a finished tabletop without removing the finish? If not, once the top is stripped, would you use chlorine bleach, oxalic acid, 2-part wood bleach, or just sanding or something else to remove the stain? Thank you.

Depending on the type of ink, there's a very good chance the stain is in the finish and hasn't reached the wood.

Make a paste of baking soda and water. Using a damp sponge, rub this micture on the affected area. You should see a lighten or diminishing of the stain. If teh stain remains the same, it has penetrated to teh wood.

Strip the top and use steel wool and white vinegar to scrub out the stain.

If the baking soda rubdown does work, you'll need to go over the entire top with an automotive abrasive (very fine) such as Turtle Wax Polishing Compound and Scratch Remover. The baking soda will dull the sheen - the Turtle Wax will restore it.
