I am in the processing of restoring an old 1800's cupboard that was in a rural home. It is pine. I am pretty sure that I do not want to strip it because it has a beautiful rustic blue paint/stain on it. It needs a good cleaning with what?? I am thinking of putting a varathene or oil finish on the top which presently has no stain or paint whatsoever. What would be a good choice?

I would guess that the finish on your piece is a shellac so make sure that the cleaning material you use does not have any alcohol in it. If it did you would take off the shellac and you do not want to do this. Start cleaning with a a damp cloth and see where that gets you. Finish the top with an oil finish like tung oil. Polyurethane is not 'old world' and an oil will preserve the 'old look'
