I have a Rheem Electric Heat Pump, Model RPFA-036JAS I think (label is worn). The AC side of things works just fine, but the heating side stops heating after running 4 to 5 hours. You can here a clicking noise, and a purge sound at the heat pump at this point. I assume that the little circuit board inside the heat pump is the defrost board. Could it be that a diode is bad on the board ? Or what could be the problem in this case ? Help !!

After several hours of operation and temperatures under 40 degrees, frosting will occur on the outdoor coil. This coil must be defrosted to restore heating capacity to the system.

The defrost cycle will last about 10 minutes MAXIMUM and then normal heating function will return. The "purging" noise is probably the hot refrigerant being dumped into the outdoor coil to defrost it.
