This is a process that is usually referred to on asphalt roofs where they melt asphalt and roll felt paper into it. They repeat the process with several layers until they think they have waterproofed it. I have read that using a copper pan in a shower with drain and solder and cement to slope floor toward drain that tile is added that this process is used. There are flexible products available that can be used to slope toward the drain rather than copper. Sometimes this is called hotmopping.

Hot mopping tends to be a preferred term among roofing experts. I have read that bath contractors claim sloping cement toward drain and then using layers of roofing felt and tar will create a waterproof shower base.

I would do further research before ruling out other methods.
