I placed several cork bottom placemats on our dining room table. The table is about 1.5 years old -- I just double checked on the manufacturer's site (Stanley) and the table is "Crafted in cherry solids and veneers."

I've used the placemats before but this time had left them on the table for about a week. There are marks on the table where the placemat edges were -- the marks are dark, almost as though oil was used to outline the placemats. From some angles they are not so noticeable, from others they are extremely obvious, depending on how the light hits them. I checked the bottoms of the placemats for any noticeable substance but could not see or feel anything.

My husband first used regular old pledge or endust. When that didn't work he got out some Murphy's Oil Soap Furniture Polish. These didn't make any difference whatsoever.

I grew up with a glass dining room table and I'm at a complete loss when it comes to wood! I'm worried that the table is effectively ruined and will have to be redone -- but I'm hoping there are things I can do that will not destroy the wood veneer or the finish.

Addendum: I just called the store where I bought the table -- not very helpful but the woman on the phone did tell me that it's not an oil finish. I'm guessing varnish, but...beats me.

Help? Anyone?

The finish isn't varnish - it's lacquer.

Drop by an automotive store and get a can of Turtle Wax polishing Compound and Scratch Remover. Apply on the entire top (for uiniformity) according to the directions on the can.

This product contains a fine abrasive that will remove any fine scratches in your table top, and should remove the dscoloration as well.
