is it okay to use 6" ceramic wall tile on the bathroom floor? The person at one place said yes, since it has a powdered back and isn't a highly trafficed area..another told me no...If yes, can we lay it directly on linoleum without having to put down a plywood backing, assuming there is plywood under the linoleum?

My first thought would be to say no...you should check with the manufacturer to see if it's suitable for floors. The linoleum will have to go in any case...a layer of backer board is a good choice.

Wall tiles are usually not recommended for floors because they tend to be less hard, less resistant to abrasion, and have less compressive strength (ability to withstand fractures). I would not recommend installing tile on floor without proper concrete board underlayment. You can search this site for additional information and tips for installing tile.

Tile is classified in 5 groups , you may see groups from 1 thru 5, or PEI ratings 1-5, 1 is low 5 is high, use at least group 2 or 3.
