I have 2 matching veneer tables that I want to paint! What is the best way to prep and go about it so that the paint will not scratch or chip off? I want this to be something that will last and look good for a few years! Thanks for any replies!

Libop:

Painting for the 'long run' is just a matter of taking the right steps:

1- Clean the surface throughly. Usually warm dish suds and a scrubbie will be sufficient.

2- If applying over an existing finish, sand. It's not necessary to remove the old finish, but the surface should be completely dulled. Sanding gives the surface a 'tooth' for the next step, which is -

3- Primer. Use one suggested for teh finish coat. Ask your paint supplier. If they tell you a primer isn't necessary - go somewhere else to buy your supplies.

4- Sand - lightly, to remove the irregularities in the primer application. Wipe down to remove all sanding debris.

5- Apply a finish coat. Select one compatible with the use the piece will get - enamels (either oil base or latex) last longer than flat wall paint.
