I am building a new deck and have three different contractors touting three differenct fastners: (1) screws, (2) hand-driven nails and (3) high-grade staples. What do you recommend? What are the pros-n-cons of these three different methods?

I like screws. Take longer to put in but it's so easy to tighten or replace a board later. Nails will loosen unless thy're ring shank, then try to get a board out! Not sure about staples, but I think they might not look as good aas screws and if they're smooth shank, they'll pull out a little, too. Any will hold the deck together, so it's a matter of aesthetics.

Trust me... You want to use screws. They hold the boards in place better, they do not loosen as quickly and easier to tighten. Lastly, if a board becomes damaged it will be easier to replace if you use screws....

Square-drive, galvanized screws. The only way to go.

Nails are a poor second choice.

Staples?? This doesn't make sense for anybody, EXCEPT the contractor doing the installing. (He's out of there in half the time, and you are left with dealing with the mess later.)

galvanized nails or screws work well unless... you live in an area where your deck will be wet for long periods of time ...in that case id go with SS (stainless steel ) ring shank nails or screws ---Also some staining can occur if u use galv in cedar decking but SS is about 20 cents a screw 10 cents a nail so its pricey...

HOpe this helps---josh

Hello
Every one is right on "SCREWS" there is no second choice ....but I like to use the DECK MASTER system it is a SS angle screwed to the joist first and the deck board layed and screwed from the bottom no screws on top at all looks realy great......Good Luck....
