I have some old shelves that were purchased dark stained or painted, I'm not sure. I would like to update them and lighten them before reusing. Any suggestions? I plan to put them on a white wall, and the woodwork in my house is light oak. Thanks
George

If you're planning to leave the shelves with a natural wood look, you need to strip them and bleach them with a two-part bleach. Look for that description (of the bleach) at your home center or hardware store.
If you want to paint them, sand completely to remove any sheen, prime, then paint.
