I have an old ugly kitchen laminate countertop. I would like to paint it until I can afford to get a new up to date kitchen. What is the process involved in painting it? Is it worth while to do this? I saw them paint one on Trading Spaces.

You can paint a countertop but it will take a lot of work. If you do this, I would recommend that you spray on the finish. This will eliminate brush marks and roller marks. Of course this means that you will need to do a lot of masking off of the areas that you do not want to paint. As far a paint goes, it depends on what durability you want for a finish. You want a hard finsh that will withstand different household chemicals and even knife marks. Different paint companies have paints that they have targeted for kitchen counters so I would recommend that you see a few of them. I would use a solvent based 2 component epoxy or single component epoxy or epoxy ester paint. They are durable and chemical resistant.
