I hired someone to install Saltillo tile in my kitchen and den....

I asked him if he has ever installed it before and he said yes. I should have taken it as a sign when I asked him if he was going to seal it prior to installing it, and he said that it was not necessary.

Well when he put the grout over the top it stained the tile...lucky of us he only got half way. Well WE sanded out the color on the tile...but now the tile on the other half of the room is now lighter than the other...

What do I do now...do I have to sand it all?????

Please help me, my hands and knee's are still sore from the 1st half....

Oh yeah... he already sealed the tiles... So I will have to sand down pretty far....

Just as a foot note, I'm telling him today not to come back...

OUCH

Shiela,

I don't pre-seal Saltillo tiles either. I do soak them thoroughly, though. I keep them wet during the entirel installation, incuding the grouting segment.

I wish you had asked some questions before you started sanding. It's possible you could have removed the cement stains with acid. I think now you'll probably have to sand the rest of the floor in order to achieve the same texture.

You can try an acid cleaner. Get it where you got the tile. Read the directions and protect your eyes. Don't breathe the stuff in. Rubber gloves, too.

Open windows, turn on the fans. Read and follow manufacturer's instructions for acid cleaner. As they say here, "If you want it done right, DIY!" It's always a good idea to check in here at DIY before beginning a project. Best regards.

I picked up Muratic Acid last night.

I will try it tonight.

How long do I let it sit for?

Wait! Hold it!

Shiela, I didn't say "muriatic acid." I said, "acid cleaner." Muriatic is too strong for you to mess with. Get the cleaner from a tile supplier. Read the directions carfully.

Once again. Do not use the muriatic.
