I have a set of bookcases that I'm trying to refinish. I've taken off the varnish and would like to remove the dark stain and refinish it with a lighter tone. I've tried some light sanding (180 grit) and it hasn't significantly affected the stain. I'm worried about sanding too vigorously and removing the grain. Any suggestions?

Dark stain is difficult to remove at best. I'd suggest a two-part bleach. Look for that description at your home center or paint store.
You didn't mention whether the bookcase is vneered or not, or what type of wood is involved, so I'd lay off the sanding until you try the bleach. Just follow the directions on the package.
