My wife has an old dresser that she picked up at a garage sale in the east years ago. It's a beautiful piece, but it has always smelled badly of mildew, so much so that we can't keep it in the house. I would love to be able to restore it to usefulness. Is there any way that I can get rid of the mildew smell "without damaging it"?

Doug:

The surest way to sliminate the old odors is to seal the piece completely with a wash coat of shellac. That's standard shellac that has been thinned 3:1 with denatured alcohol.

You'll need to go over the entire piece, especially the interior. Every piece of would that is raw (no finish) should recieve a coat. Don't forget the interior, back (outside) and underneath of the drawers.
