I recently read a previous message about updating an ugly brick fireplace using cultured stone. It was suggested that a wire mesh be used and attached with small concrete nails. Is this all that needs to be done and can I use other kinds of tile? Does the brick need to be cleaned or prepared in any other way?

If you clean the brick well enough, scrape, wire brush, chisel, You dont really need the mesh. Thinset is your tile
'glue', and it bonds to brick, as it is a mortar product, just like the stuff between the bricks. Have fun, it's supposed to be !
good luck

Hello
If you use the cultured stone you need to use the wire it is insalled with stucco and needs the wire to hold onto stucco will not stick to tile.....Good luck
