I help out at the local club and they have steel stairs we wish to paint but someone told us to put sand in the paint so the steps won't be slippery. What kind of paint and how much sand should we put in or is there something else we should use?

I would recommend using an oilbased primer and go to a paint store and by an additive used to make paint nonscuff. Use a semigloss or satin paint if you want a slight sheen on your steps. Sand will work (sort of). It will give you a lot of brush drag and it will spread out a little but it will also be scuffed off very quickly and it will settle to the bottom of your paint can very quickly.

tollgater,
I believe that if you can find a safety supply catlog you will be able to purchase either rubber mats or a non-slip safety tape to apply to each tread.
