I messed up. I decided to strip the old stain and finish off the trim of our windows. I spent a lot of time and effort on this. I went to stain the trim and it looks horrible! I must have sanded down too far in a couple of places, because the stain is actually black in certain spots. Is there a "fix" for this, or at least something that will improve its appearance somewhat? Your help/suggestions are appreciated!

How well did you stir the stain? Did you rag off the stain after it has set for awhile or did you just leave it there to dry? What about your application, was the brush overloaded when it hit the wood?

NewbieAnna,
Bazooka's got good advice on the application technique.
Your trim is probably pine and this does occasionally present some problems with blotchiness. If you haven't gone too far in your staining efforts you can try this. To the bare wood, apply a pre-stain conditioner. This will partially seal the wood so the stain goes on more evenly.
good luck,
