Hi,my family and I have just moved into a 6 year old house that has a stone fire place without a mantel. The house is classic country. I would like to build the mantel myself but I am not sure what I want. Where does one begin? I would like to look at variuos designs first. Does anyone have any suggestion as to where to start looking?? Thanks in advance.

Start by looking in Fireplace shops or Building Supply places for pre-fab mantle kits and fireplace surrounds). You might find one that you like, or you can get a good idea of what components you'll need.
You can use a single beam for a mantle, or you can build one by bolting a 2X to the stone fireplace and boxing a 1X mantle and adding molding and trim. Stain or paint to suit.
Check with your local Building Inspection Department for code about placement height above the firebox.
Good Luck! Mike
