Painting - Help me paint the sunset in Tuscany

My kitchen has terra cotta tile and tongue and groove medium wood ceiling. I'd like to color wash the walls with a rosy glow, like a sunset. I'm leaning towards 2 colors, an orange and a pink. I'd like it to be more subtle than vibrant. Questions:
1. I want the pink to stand out more, should it be the base or top coat?
2. Can I thin both coats with glaze to get a more translucent effect?

You can thin both colors with glaze, but whatever your wall color is before you add your glazes will likely "peek thru".
I might be tempted to approach it like this: paint the walls a pale gold for an undertone, then wash your pink and orange over it. Adding less glazing medium to the pink than the orange will make it a stronger, less transparent color. I'd try to use the same gold I used on my walls to mix with the pink to get my orange tone, then mix the glazing medium into it...that way the colors mesh well. Don't forget, the colors will dry darker than you anticipate, so it's a good idea to practice first. Good luck!
