View Full Version : New oak like old oak

I have been refinishing an 100 year old solid oak mantle and need to make repairs. Since I don't have any aged oak to make the repairs, is there any way to make the new (and reddish hued) oak to look like the beautiful aged oak. I am planning on using a cherry oil stain but on the new pieces it just enhances the red tint. What can I do to make it more aged like the rest of the mantle? Thanks for any and all advice.

JeaneV,
I understand your problem, and about the only way to get them to match is to do some more testing. Here are a couple suggestions. Try a sanding sealer on the new pieces, then apply the stain. The sanding sealer may keep the wood from absorbing too much red stain. Another method may be to try a golden oak stain first, then your final stain. I would do all the testing on scrap first. I'm sure some combination of prep will get them to match fairly close.
good luck,
fred
