I HAVE A RATHER EXPENSIVE SERVING CART TABLE OF PECAN WOOD WITH A BLACK SLATE TOP. THE TOP HAS AN ETCHED DESIGN. BECAUSE IT IS 40YRS. OLD AND HAS HAD A LOT OF USE IT NEEDS TO BE REFURBISHED. WHAT DO I DO TO BRING LIFE BACK INTO THE SLATE. IT IS BLEMISHED WITH DULL BLOTCHES.

I would try a "poultice" obtainable at a tile or marble supply house. I would be afraid to suggest anything stronger.
If and when you get the slate clean, seal it with a good stone sealer and keep it sealed in the future. Aquamix is what I recommend.
