Hello,

I would like to install a tile floor over my existing, old, but in good shape hardwood floor. I am also replacing all appliances and have never done this before. I would like to know if I should tile the entire floor and then sit the appliances on top of the tiled floor or should I tile around the appliances?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Eve

Hi Eve,

Hardwood floorboards are not a good substrate for ceramic tiles. I assume you're talking about ceramic.

You might be able to install cement backer board over the floor and then the tiles. Depends on how much clearance you have under the counter for the dishwasher.

In any case, the tiles go under the appliances.

Thank you John. I will actually lay down plywood on top of my hardwood floor and then the tile. I've read that that's good support for floor tile.

I'm also wondering when I should use thinset and when I should use tile adhesive. It seems that for bathroom walls waterproof mastic adhesive is used, for kitchen countertops you use thinset and for kitchen floors you use tile adhesive. Is this correct?

Thank you,
Eve
