I HAVE JUST FINISHED MAKING A BABY CRIB FOR MY GRANDSON AND HAVE USED A SOLVENT BASED WOOD DYE. I HAVE TWO COATS OF FORMBY'S TUNG OIL OVER THAT AND ONLY NOW AM WONDERING IF THIS IS GOING TO BE SAFE FOR THE NEW BABY. OF COURSE BOTH PRODUCTS INDICATE THAT ARE NOT TO BE INGESTED BUT AFTER THE SOLVENT EVAPORATES THE FORMBY'S PEOPLE HAVE TOLD ME IT SHOULD BE SAFE, EVEN IF THE BABY SUCKS ON IT. I AM NOT SO SURE. WOULD IT BE WISE TO PUT SEVERAL COATS OF POLY FINISH OVER THE DYE AND TUNG OIL TO "SEAL" ANY OF THE SOLVENT BASE PRODUCTS FROM HARMING A NEW BABY? IF NOT, ARE THERE ANY OTHER PRODUCTS THAT COULD BE USED? I APPRECIATE ANY INFORMATION I CAN GET. I WOULD HATE THE THOUGHT OF PITCHING THIS PROJECT AND STARTING OVER. THANKS. ROY

Roy:
The Formby's people told you right - the product is harmless once it cures completely. Putting a poly coat over the tung opil would just give you another product to worry about - the poly. (Waterbase would work if you hadn't alrady put the tung oil on, but you can't use it over an oil finish...)
