OK, I'm about to refinish 50-year old red oak floors. I'd prefer an unstained, "natural" color. Any opinions on what kind of polyurethane to use, oil based or water based?
I prefer the look of water-based poly, as oil-based seems to yellow. But I've heard horror stories about water based finishes peeling or wearing away in short order. Any thoughts?

Oil based poly is reported to be more durable, more smelly, requires longer drying time and tends to yellow. Water based poly is reported to be less durable, less smelly, dries quicker and does not tend to yellow. 3 or more coats is best, whichever you choose. Most folks tend to go with a quality water-based poly. How well your finish wears depends on the amount of activity and the quality of its care. Best regards.
