John or anyone, Has anybody had a bad experience with a new Hard smooth surfaced fiberglass shower pan. I mean, do they allow movement enough to say; break the caulking seal. John I have no leaking pipes and the tile is triple sealed. The junction of bottom row of tile and pan is grouted and then caulked over. Is that a problem? I'm grasping fellas..Help!

Rick,

There are a lot of problems with the fiberglass bases. Grouting the joint between the tiles and the fiberglass is not the thing to do. That grout may be keeping the caulking from doing its job. Try getting all of that out of there, and then re-caulk using silicone.

You'll have to let everything dry out completely before installing the new cauking. I won't adhere well to a damp surface.

Hi John, It's Sat eve and I just recieved your e-mail. It all sounds great. Let me share my day with you. It was spent doing exactly what you specified in this response. I did discover that this new pan was rather flimsy and flexed an awful lot. So, I foamed all around it (cutting into 2 back walls), then I dug the grout and old caulking out from between the bottom tile and pan and anywhere it appeared weakly stuck. I then drilled second holes (2 @ 3/16") into track close to walls on either side. Lots of acumulated water inside. My pan has dropped 1/4" from where it started (1/8") the other way. Guess floor and bearing wall settleing. Then I spent all day trying to dry it out behind the tracking, under the tile. At days end it was still moist or damp, so I postponed re-caulking until I can check it out tomarrow. I will take my blow drier with me. The Glass man did not remove vertical wall track and instead simply ran a wider bead of caulking inside and (uglified, oakified) the outside. And did not cure the leak that I was able to determine was coming from end of track. It will be sealed now though and I'm especially grateful for your responses. This little project really had me grasping. I don't claim to know it all and have learned some valuable lessons here. Thanks for eveything........RICK
