I have acquired interior shutters which are stained VERY dark. I would like to strip the frame (not the louvers) and stain them natural maple. Is this possible? They do not appear to have any finish over the stain. Do I sand the dark stain down to neutral? Thanks for the info.

Sanding would be the easiest way - and I'm glad you're not trying to lighten the louvers as well - that's a LOT of work!
