I'm repairing an earthquake-damaged chimney that serves two fireplaces -- there were two flues in the chimney, one for each fireplace. If the chimney is rebuilt reinforced, it is not large enough to accommodate two flues of proper size. Can a single flue be used to serve two fireplaces?

Another question: The building code does not seem to address this -- is there a reference that can be shown to the building official to show that one flue is O.K. for two chimneys O.K.?

The answer to your question is no. Do NOT use one flue for two fireplaces.
Smoke will backdraft down the other, for one thing. It is unsafe, and against code in most places that I know of, even if your local code does not address it.
Good Luck!
