I'm building an entertainment center out of 3/4" MDF, and have been told there is a particular primer to use for this type of wood, but I think any old primer will do. Who's right? I plan on spray-painting the entire center flat black after.
Thanks in advance!

audio1der,
There is really no need to prime MDF. It has a paper covering and there are no saps or resins to leach through. I have brushed and sprayed it with good results.

Fred is 'right on' in his comments. MDF is used extensively by sign painters - no priming is necessary.

Thank you both for your replies! In thinking about it now, not priming it might help keep it a nice deep, flat black also.

What about using 3/4" plywood instead? It'll hold up better than MDF. Somewhat more costly, but better structurally.
