View Full Version : Grout problem

We are in the process of finishing a new home and have hired out a masonry company to install cultured stone on a very large fireplace. The grout used between the rocks is not uniform in color ~ they claim they can't "fix it" without ripping all the rocks off! How can we fix this problem, we would like to have the same colored grout over the entire fireplace/chimney without having to regrout, which would make it look like a patch job. It's roughly 5'x 21'. Thanks for any help.

The easiest solution has been posed. The remaining possibilities (tuckpointing and recoloring) would be significantly more difficult under the circumstances. (Tuckpointing is iffy, and dependant on a series of yahdas).

Under the circumstances either one would require a multi-phasic exceptional skill set. So, while the claim is not 100% accurate, it is reasonable; no, tuckpointing and recoloring are not easily accomplished, and yes, given time and practice either of the latter may be learnt. After the basics have been assimilated the need to develop specialized tools and/or procedures would come into play.

Where does that leave you? Around the U.S., and in some other countries there are a few companies that specialize in recoloring brick, stone, mortar and/or grout. If you're interested in a not so inexpensive solution: [U.S., Canadian] http://www.brickimaging.com/ http://www.masonryart.com

Hello
First off you should not have to fix it if the masonry company can not fix it do not pay them, the job is not good no pay untill it is...if it all has to come off so be it....just get it done right...you are the one to live with it for ever and now that it is a problem it will always be a problem, deal with it now....get help from who ever you need to to make them make it right conr.stste lic. board..a good Attorney....too many contractor can say to bad and leave people just take it...been in buisness for 40 years and you can not make every one happy, but you must try...If you try hard enough you will make a good contractor some day....
If you do not want them to have to remopve all of the stone then let them Pay you to keep it.....then keep what is there....then we can fix it...there are ways......Good luck...
