Not to worry!! I've done this many times and never had any "foul" jobs in the final product...
To "rebuild" the wallboard where the paper was torn, assuming that this is revealing brown paper similar to our old fashoned grocery bags, all that is needed is to feather some wallboard compound over these areas (don't worry if you get small "ripples" in the paper, those can be sanded smooth once dried!)let dry for a day, sand smooth... PRIME IT!!! must use new construction latex primer to seal up the wallboard and cover the glue residue. If you plan to use semi-gloss paint, you must sand and feather all the edges of the torn paper spots and be sure they are smooth in appearance before priming and painting. I recommend using olympic latex interior for the final job. Good luck and remember, this job may be a little time consuming so have many patience!!!

Thanks for asking the same question I've been trying to find the answer to! I just removed wallpaper and am wondering if I got all the glue off, so I can paint. Good Luck!

I have been needing the same information, but I am told that I must use an OIL primer, as opposed to a latex, in order to seal the wall. ? Will a latex work just as well, considering it must cover the patch jobs along with the old layers of paint on the rest of the wall?

I would suggest a test area if all paste is not removed and an oil primer is not an option (it never is if we can help it!) to make sure paint discoloration doesn't occur....Mike
