I would like to use an airless paint gun to paint a 5piece crown molding that is already up. The smooth finish (no brush strokes) is what I'm interested in. As a careful but nonprofessional do you think I can do it, what type and size would you recommend and what type of paint? Thanks

Using an airless gun for crown molding might be a lil' overkill. A good flowing latex brushed on will not leave noticeable brush marks, especially at ceiling height. All my woodwork, including interior doors, are brushed on latex. No outstanding brush marks. If you are changing color you may require two coats.

I agree with Fewalt a good quality latex brushed on will not leave noticable brush marks. The thing with using a brush is not to overwork the paint (i.e. trying to brush the brush marks out) this tend to dry latex paint out to quickly which dries the paint out quicker. Brush on the latex and you should be just fine.
