I have tan/gray brick around my fireplace and I would like to paint it the same cream color as my walls. It does not have any soot stains, but there are other stains that I cannot identify! I think I see some gum and general dirt along the front ledge. How should I clean the surface? There is one spot about 2 inches long where the mortar has come out. Do I fill it and with what? Also, what kind of primer should I use? I used a water-based latex on the walls and would like to use the same if possible.
Thanks

Start by sanding entire section lightly with a sanding sponge. Clean area with soap and water. Fill damaged or missing mortar joint with DAP concrete & mortar sealant/fill, it's available in a tube for use in a caulking gun. Let dry per instructions. Prime bricks and joints with Kilz Ultra Low Odor (2 coats if needed). Finish paint with a quality latex.

Have fun & good luck!
