I have a brick fireplace hearth that needs to be replaced.
It's a small job, and I'm having difficulty finding someone
who wants to do it. Is this a difficult job? Is it
something I can do myself?

Most masonry jobs are physically demanding and require good dexterity and hand/eye coordination. You might be able to perform the task, but I think you will find it more difficult and frustrating than anticipated.
If everyone else is too busy you could try the American Association of Retired Persons. There may be a retired mason available who is willing to help.
