I don't know much about the special painting techniques beyond what's in the how-to books.

In a room with white walls, I want to create a smoke or sooty look around the walls. I don't want a heavy look.

Would I use more glaze and less paint than the standard 4-to-1 mixture?

Would a light grey, medium grey, dark gray or black be best?

What technique should I use? color-washing? rag-on? sponge-on?

Any tips to share that aren't often mentioned in the books?

Thank you.
