We're thinking about purchasing a house that basically needs to be completely gutted on the first floor. (It's bad, but has tons of potential.)

We'd like to remove all the walls and completely open up the first floor. I realize you can't remove a load-bearing wall, but what if the wall was replaced with a line of support beams? Either wood or studs surrounded by drywall.

We'd hire a contractor to do this work, but we'll try to lower costs by doing some of the initial work and hard labor ourselves. I just want to know if this is even possible before we buy.

Thanks!

Anything is almost possible as long as it has the proper support. Check w/an architect or an engineer.
