My husband and I are building our first house. To save money, we are doing all of the staining (woodwork & cabinets) ourselves. I understand this is a big project. What is the best, and most efficient way to do this?

The biggest time (and labor) saving measure you can take is to stain absolutely everything you can before it's installed. This means staining the full lengths of trim as they come from the building supply - before they're cut and fitted.
You'll have a little touchup to do after the fact, but that's a lot easier than trying to stain the woodwork in place without getting the stain on the walls, the floor, etc.
This may be a little difficult to do with the cabinets (I assume they're custom made), but check with the cabinet maker - he'll probably work with you if your requests aren't unreasonable.
