I read that the best way to lay drywall is with a minimum of butt joints, which can sometimes be horizontal. I also read that if the ceiling height is more than 8' 6", it should be applied vertically. One drywall person told me that horiztontal seams will crack and cause problems faster than vertical seams, due to the weight and stress from the drywall above. My ceiling height is 9' 3" and the wall length is 11' 9". Laying it horizontally will decrease the number of seams and be easier overall, I think. Any thoughts about this. Thank you for your reply.

i've never heard of that. butt joints are a fact of life
when you're drywalling but the less seams you have to finish
the better i like it. buy 4'x12' drywall and you won't have
any butt joints at all. and i would put it up horizontally.
all the weight is going to be held by the screws you put in
it.

Just make sure that you stagger the butt Joints on the ceiling. It is easier to hide the butt joint seams when patching, if they are staggered.
