We will probably be adding on to the house increasing the living space by 25%. Would it be best to upgrade our existing system now about 10 years old or have the new adition on its own independent system?

Properly maintaining a heating and cooling system means $100 to $200 per year. ($1000 to $2000 in 10 years.)

Chances are that your current unit is more than adequate to heat and cool the planned addition. Do a heat calculation on the planned home and modifications and see.

The only issue becomes the ductwork design and making sure that there is space for the ductwork needed to deliver air to both areas.
