Walls and Ceilings - Can I hand texture over ceiling wallpaper?

The ceiling is covered with wallpaper. Rather than try to remove it, I was wondering if I could hand texture over it using all purpose joint compound. the wallpaper is on the stuff they used to use before sheetrock was invented, not sure what it's called.Thanks!

Hi Fox,as far as putting up joint compound over paper,forget it.the weight of the joint compound will pull the paper down.Remove the wallpaper then apply the texture.The stuff your thinking about is called plaster.
