Should a 2 zone hvac system use the same return air duct or should they be separate?

Most likely the same return duct is used, but it realy depends on the design of the system.

My single unit, dual zone (upstairs/downstairs) HVAC system uses the same return ductwork, but has separate damper-controlled supplies, of course.
Works fine. I suppose the returns could be separate, too, as long as it ended back up returning to the unit.
Probably less expensive to have a common return.
