Our downstairs has gotten hotter and hotter the last few days. It is a 2 1/2 year old "new" house and the ACs have never been serviced. The ACs are Bryants and run off electricity. I have cleaned the filter, coils, and compressor doohickey at the bottom of the AC unit outside. Everything looks clean. One line is warm, the other one was frozen, or at least had significant build up. Now that ice has melted, but still no cold air blowing downstairs...no air at all (well, ok, a teeny tiny bit...hard to tell). Went up to the attic where the AC line hooks into the ducting and gas heat. The line up there is still frozen.
Do I just need to wait?
Could I possibly be out of freon?
Thanks in advance!

Give it a chance to thaw, then inspect the coil in the Air Handler. If it is dirty, get it clean. Then have the freon checked. If everything in clean, definitely have the freon checked. It wouldn't surprise me if you are a bit low. Make sure that the tech finds the leak (probably the service port valve cores).

Thanks Ron! Everything is working great now that it's clean.
If and when I need a leak check and repair, what's a ballpark estimate?

The cost of a basic service call will vary from region to region. Here in N. Central FL, it's running $50 to $75 for the average basic tune up.
Make them show you the starting and ending weight of the freon jug. The one scam that just annoys me no end is the joker that trys to charge some one for some ridiculous amount of freon. Typically it will be less than 2 to 3 pounds added unless your system is completely leaked out (which doesn't sound like the case).
