Doors and Windows - Can I put a Door under a staircase

I have a large staircase in the front hall with some wated space underneath it. I have seen, in some older homes, a door that opens up that wasted space for a small closet or storage area. I would probably try to find a smaller sixe door (4ft?)to install in this area.

Is there any thing I need to be aware of before I start cutting a hole?

Just put a door header across any framing supports for the stairs that you cut to support the weight.
