I am getting estimates on tinting the windows on the west side of my house. Thus far, they all want to put the films on the inside of the window. The windows are all double pane however. I was under the impression that films on double pane windows should be on the outside. They claim that the films will not break the windows, but just in case they include glass breakage coverage from the film manufacturer.
This leaves me a little concerned. Sounds a little like the worthless home warranties.
Any suggestions or experiences with either?

Companies now manufacture film which is engineered specificaly for IG units and application on the inside is standard practice. My understanding of your concern which I learned from a Madico sales rep is that way back when.... someone, somewhere, used film they shouldn't have and their were some isolated incidences with heat build up and IG unit failure. As bad press and miss-information linger on longer than a problem, manufacturers went ahead and put warrantees in place to offer piece of mind as a warrantee can offer more security than a salesman's word.
