My GE gas dryer gets hot, But it isn't hot enough. I have to dry the clothes twice as long to get them dry. Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome Barry to the Do It Yourself Web Site and thanks for posting a question in my Gas Appliance forum.

The most common cause is a Restricted Exhaust Vent.
Check the entire system. This also includes the exhaust vent hood outside. It has a flapper that may not be opening fully or not at all.

Locate any restriction within the entire exhaust system and clean out all lint. Replace exhaust vent tubing as needed. Plastic vent tubing is fine. It's located behind or to the side of the dryer. It needs to be removed to clean out the lint.

Safety Reminder:
ALWAYS be positive you have unplugged the electrical power and turned off the gas supply to the appliance prior to attempting any repairs!

Thank you for your advice. I have checked the dryer vent and there is no obstruction within the vent hose. The vent hose is new and the dryer worked just fine after it was installed.Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Barry

Now that the exhaust system is verified to be free of any restrictions, there are electrical parts and sensors that will have to be checked.

Below is a list of other possibilities that I can think of that may or may not apply. Since the vent is the easiest item to check, I suggested it first. Since that didn't correct the problem, the more difficult items are next.

The glow coil must be HOT and glow an INTENSE bright yellow orange color. If not, it's considered to be burned out. A weak coil may cause the problem you have. It could glow hot on the first cycle but not on other cycles.

Defective Solenoids:
There are two...both are on top of the gas valve.
You'll need to either remove them from the top of the gas valve or remove the entire gas valve assembly first. Take them or the entire unit to your local appliance parts store for testing. Solenoids also supply voltage to the glow coil and are part of the electrical loop.

Defective Gas Valve:
Remove entire unit as an assembly. Take the entire unit to your local appliance parts store for testing. Gas valves are not repairable. Replacement is the only option.

CAUTION: Do Not attempt to repair the gas valve! This is a non repairable item!

Timer:
Control center for all functions. The timer has contacts and as it advances through the cycles, one of those contacts can become stuck for any one of several reasons. Timers also have cams <lobes> that open and close those contact points. If the timer hangsup on a lobe, it may or may not advance to the next cycle.

If the timer or any other selection switch, on the front control panel, is suspected of causing the existing problem your having with the appliance, be sure all selections are correctly set.

If they are, the timer or other function selected switch may be defective. Timers are a non repairable item. Any or all of them can be removed and taken to the local appliance retail parts store for testing.

Timers and switches can be checked for continuity using an ohm meter or continuity tester. Timers and switches are a non repairable items.

Flame Sensor:
This part is located on the burner housing. If it's defective, it will cause the problem your discribing. It too can be tested.

Safety Reminder:
ALWAYS be positive you have unplugged the electrical power and turned off the gas supply to the appliance prior to attempting any repairs!

Any and all parts can be tested for continuity. Any part can also be taken to the local appliance retail parts store for electrical testing.
