Hi. I would like to replace a glass block window in my bathroom with a single pane window (that opens to the side). It is about 2'x3'.How difficult will this be? I have several concerns:
1) How tough is it to remove glass block windows, since they're set in with concrete.
2) Since there will only be a window opening (but no frame), how hard will it be to insert a new frame in the window? (I've installed replacement windows before, but never a new window+frame.)
3) I'm guessing I should be able to buy whole window+frame units. Is this correct?
4) The bathroom is on the second floor -- is this something I can do entirely from the inside?

Any advice would be great, thanks!

Hi dswolff, the glass block is set in mortor, once you get the first one out,the rest come out pretty easy.I usually just hit them with a hammer to brake them lose.Once you remove the blocks, your framing for the new window, well be the framing that was used to hold your glass blocks.Check what size your rough opening has to be for your new window. If the window your going to install is smaller then the opening your going to have to add some lumber to get the rough opening for the window. The window you need to install is called a new constrution window. Its installed from the outside and is nailed to the rough opening, throu the nailing flange. Now i know lefty and jack the contractor, say there is a window with the nailing flange on the inside, but i havent seen one yet,(am still looking guys,LOL),So if you can get one of those windows, you can install the window from the inside of the house,(here we go again guys, lol)Make sure you level the window before you nail it to the framing. One more thing, check the opening before you order the window,is it 2x4 constrution,or 2x6.

Good Luck
