We are going to cover a doorway with drywall. The exsisting walls are also drywall. How do we get a smooth finish on the seams and corners, with new to old drywall.

hi chellmo1,I guess you already know how to frame in the opening after you remove the door.As far as tape and finish,it takes a long time to be able to finish drywall. But the way you do it is once the drywall is hung, tape the seams with fibergleas mess tape, and apply the first coat of joint compound over the tape using a 6" taping knife.Apply it thin, just enough to just about covering the tape.Let this dry,and then apply the second coat, using a 8" taping knife, again apply it thin. When the second coat drys apply the finish coat using a 12" taping knife.Once it drys, sand it down using drywall sandpaper. You want to try and sand the edges even with the exiting drywall, you dont want any rough edges, where the old drywall meets the new.Should you remove to much and you can see the seam tape just apply more "MUD" to that area, let dry and sand again. If you dont want to wait for the MUD to dry by itself, you can use a heat gun or a hair drier to help speed up the process. If you use a heat gun dont use the high setting, and be real careful.

Good Luck
