i have a 120 x 30 concrete driveway. it is about 6 years old. i have never had any problems, but last year was one of the worst ice storm years we have ever had. i hardly ever use salt to avoid damaging the cement, but i had to on several occasions for safety reasons. i have several areas of pitting in the driveway and i am at a loss on what to do. i want to know what my options for repairing the drive and until we have the finances to repair it, does anyone know if the concrete sealer used for basements would work to seal the drive and prevent moisture in the winter from creating more problems. i am also wondering if the protectant will discolor the drive. thanks for any advice.

You can patch over the areas with a product called vinyl concrete patch. It has a bonding agent in it to help the patching material bond to the old concrete. Just follow the directions on the bag. As far as using the sealer that you used in your basement. Yes it will work but yes it will "yellow" or discolor. You can purchase non-yellowing sealer from your local concrete company, but since the damage is already done and the concrete is fairly old, it is basically too late to seal it. Now when you need to deice or salt your driveway, try using calcium chloride in a pellet of flake form instead. It is not harmfull to concrete like salt is and does just as good if not better job at deicing. Hope this helps.
